Waste Diversion Elevated Enviro Ratings:

Old Spice Deodorant

In today's video we take a look at Old Spice Deodorant and see how recyclable and sustainable it is based on the most common recycling facilities. We review products through the lens of reduce, reuse and recycle.

The  outside packaging is a little excessive on top, the paper could be reduce, however it is recyclable and can be placed in most blue bag recycling programs. There is a plastic covering showing off the product, this is problematic because we do not know the quality of the plastic. Plastic ranges in quality from 1 to 7 , the lower the quality the smaller the market it has to be recycled. Often the lower quality plastic gets landfilled. The plastic covering is glued to the paper backing, this glue sticks and reduces its chance of being recycled.

The majority of the stick is plastic, small in size and of unknown quality. The small size lends itself to being lost in the sorting process thus it gets landfilled. The unknown quality reduces the market it has to be recycled often meaning the product gets, you guessed it, landfilled. There is a plastic lid inside of the larger lid, this seems completely unnecessary, it is very small. It is items like these that end up in our oceans through missing the sorting process all together. This smaller second lid could be removed or replaced with cardboard.

The actual deodorant itself is typically used and I don't see a large issue there.

As a result of all the plastic waste, small size and unknown quality Elevated Enviro rates this products 2 out of 5.
