Waste Diversion Elevated Enviro Ratings:

Olay Total Effects

Elevated Enviro rates products on their sustainability and their ability to be diverted from landfills, waste diversion, in other words can it be recycled. This video reviews Olay, Total Effects, moisturizer.

The packaging has excessive amounts of paper backing, this could be easily reduced. The biggest issue with this backing is that it is a blend of foil and paper. Items that have a blend of materials like chip bags (plastic and foil) typically can't be recycled because you need to separate the foil from the paper. This task is too much for recyclers to do and as a result most of this product and others like it get landfilled.

The outside packaging has a plastic covering. This plastic covering is typically made of low quality plastic and as a result does not have a market for recyclers to re-sell to. This is because the plastic is too weak to be re-purposed.

The product container is made of plastic. The quality is unknown and as a result does not have a market to be turned into something else.  It is also very small in size and most recycling facilities would miss it, this would mean the product ends up in the landfill.

Considering the packaging, paper and foil, the product container (small unknown quality) and the actual moisturizer the only thing can be diverted from the landfill is the moisturizer but you would have to break the container to get to any of the unused amounts.

Because of this we give Olay, Total Effects an 0.8/5.
