Drywall

Drywall makes up 13% of construction, renovation & demolition waste.

Drywall is made of a sheet of gypsum, covered by a paper facing and a paperboard backing and various additives to decrease mildew, increase fire resistance, and lower water absorption. The Gypsum is also used as a fertilizer.

On average up to 12 percent of Drywall becomes waste during manufacturing and when when being installed. This makes a big contribution to the materials that end up in landfills and increasing landfills are starting to no longer accept drywall.

The ideal solution for gypsum material is a closed-loop re-utilization of the material, in which recycled material is returned to the wallboard manufacturer to be used to make new drywall. Gypsum can essentially be recycled forever with no degradation to the material, to reduce the volume of new material that is needed.

Recycling Process

1. Sort & Ship

Gathering the drywall at the site for delivery or pickup.

2. Separate

Separate the gypsum from the paper, nails and anything else attached to it.

3. Recycle

Recycled gypsum is sold to local drywall producers, paper goes to paper mills for recycling

4. Reuse

Manufacturers use recycled materials to make new products.

One thing to do different

Since 12% of new construction drywall is wasted during installation putting the drywall scraps into the interior wall cavities save it from going to landfills, and provides a little extra soundproofing and insulation

New Recycling Programs

One Canadian drywall recycling success story is New West Gypsum Recycling in Vancouver. Since 1986, they’ve recycled over 2 million tonnes of drywall scrap.

Effect on our Community

We can completely remove drywall from going to landfills and reduce manufacturing impact by making new drywall with recycled material.
